Albert started the
meeting on the dot and got us to introduce ourselves with the ice-breaker
topic of “Your mobile phone subscriber”.
Opening Address
Lisa Ooi, the Club
President, shared with us a little story about a young monk who built
a wall on the land that he was given. A brick, a dollop of cement and
another brick - the young monk diligently ensured that the bricks were
laid evenly when building the wall. After the wall was completed, he
noticed that two bricks were out of alignment. He felt ashamed of those
two “bad bricks”. Whenever there were visitors passing the wall,
he would hurry them past. One day, there was a guest who noticed the
wall. To the young monk’s amazement, the guest told him that it was
a beautiful wall. Didn’t he see the two “bad bricks”?
The guest replied, “Yes, I saw the two bricks. However, the rest (98%)
of the bricks make a beautiful wall.” The young man realized
how foolish he had been to have focused on the 2% “bad bricks” instead
of the 98% - the beautiful wall. Through this story, Lisa reminded us
to always focus on and appreciate the 98% “good bricks” (good qualities)
in ourselves, our loved ones, friends and people around us instead of
the 2% “bad bricks” (shortcomings).
